CMS Enacts 2017 Improvements for Mental Health Care

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has finalized its 2017 physician fee schedule with an eye toward further supporting behavioral healthcare. The new schedule improves payments to primary care providers for chronic care management and behavioral health cases.

Specifically, CMS is finalizing payments for codes that describe specific behavioral health services furnished using the psychiatric Collaborative Care Model. In this model, a team approach is applied to care for patients, with actors including the primary care practitioner, a behavioral healthcare manager, and a psychiatric consultant. CMS reports this model manifests demonstrated benefits in a variety of settings.
